BELTANE - Messages from Spirit, Ancestry, the Maypole and Creation

Hello once again soul family. I’m Akasha and this time I’d like to mix interesting story time and a history lesson into one. I’m going to write about why I, a black American young woman, feel as though I am being called out by the spirit of Beltane, an ancient European tradition and now plan to celebrate this year lol. Firstly, I’ve felt called out as soon as and ever since spring hit. In early March, as I’m walking to work and admiring the new flower buds, my eye catches something sparkly on the stone fence to my right so I check it out and it’s a tiny plastic baggie with a gold and green cross pendant in it.

I asked around and couldn’t find anyone who who recognized the symbols for definite but a few said it gave them a “Celtic” or “Irish” vibe. This was Pisces season so Spirit spoke very dreamy and synchronistically like the signs and messages would just flow in out of nowhere and blend in with the conversation or answer your questions. Therefore a lot of these random things had been happening so I took note and was grateful but kinda moved on since they were constantly flowing. A few weeks later once Aries season had started, spirit started speaking a lot louder and more bluntly. It seemed like though we were still in a regrouping and trauma purging phase, the signs to keep going were consistent and there was an energy of getting ready to start the race.

So in this time, Spirit sent me my first four leafed clover EVER. Never even gave them much thought, but I say that spirit “sent me” them because of the odd ways that I found them and perfect timing they’d exhibit when I started finding more. It became a regular thing for my eyes to fall on or for me to stumble upon a four leafed clover when I was having a good day or making good decisions.

Jokingly one night I told myself that it’s probably a leprechaun ancestor trying to reach out to me like like that movie “Luck of the Irish “ lol. That reminded me that my current last name (my paternal side name, given as a teen against my will 🙄) was from somewhere over there, so I looked into it and found out that it’s “Gaelic” which is a Celtic language said to be brought from a region in Ireland in 5th and 6th centuries A.D. I read that my last name dates back prior to 15th century I’m Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and England. Anyways, I started using the clovers to mix up little good luck potions...

and started really gratefully wondering why I’m being sent such wonderful magic, it felt like life was blooming all around me and lucky things really were happening.

Then, at the beginning of April while deciding what to blog about and about to choose Earth Day, I see that Beltain is an option.. “hmmm I remember that name.. is that the one that’s also called MayDay?” I thought “the one that falls on my birthday?” Lol of course I have to look into it now! And, it turns out to be another Celtic tradition! In old pagan tradition, February 1st was the beginning of spring so May 1st was celebrated as the beginning of summer.

To go even further down the rabbit hole, I spent 2018 as and exotic dancer but my spirits pushed me to take what I learned and move on, so I’m currently done with it but I’ve come to enjoy the art of pole dancing so I really wanted my own pole. Mercury retrograde happened around this time also and right at the start I decided to be impulsive and I ordered a really cheap pole and had to send it back because it kept falling lol.

It was a scarily illuminating time, as well as *so* well needed. I learned new skills though and was super busy and by the end I had ordered the perfect pole for me and set it up myself. Long story short, I found out that Beltain is celebrated by a traditional Northern European festivity where they erect a pole called a “Maypole” and do what they call the “Maypole dance.” Yeahhh I know right, the oddness.

The ancients who celebrated originally are from Northern Europe in those same areas but the specific origins are obscure. It is believed that the original ancients danced and did rituals around bonfires and the Maypole, and then over time the different European religions made their own versions. The most common and modern being the more communal maypole dance done in both Europe and America where the community comes together and walk/dance around a large pole, each holding a string to symbolize unity, strength in community, and strength for a prosperous “summer” season.

That information definitely made me take my theory a bit more seriously so I looked back into my last name and found through family records of a white man with the same last name as me who decided to research and map out his name origins (the privilege of having your ancestor’s original last name lol), that not only is there evidence of my name traveling straight from Europe to Virginia (born and raised), but that here, North Carolina, and of course Pennsylvania are the first places that the Scotch-Irish settled when coming over and were/owned indentured servants upon this land. So even if it isn’t my own ancestor reaching out, there’s just a strong energy of ancient Celtic knowledge that’s seeming to come up to the surface in my surroundings.

So now we’re at a month after finding the first charm and a dear social media friend brings up the discussion of fairies and hybrids of humans and magical species. I had forgotten how connected I felt to fairytales and fairies and even recalled me picking “Tink” as my nick-name amongst my friend group in 5th grade because I was mesmerized by Tinker Bell’s lovely lifestyle mix of nature and magic. Also when I first started pole dancing, the freedom of flying and spinning and expressing my body fluidly intoxicated me and I really enjoyed calling myself a “pole fairy” because that’s what it felt like.

Many different places have fairy folklore but Ireland has one of the strongest traditions. I talked about this with a close spiritual friend who I’ve been journeying with since high school so far and like me she’s from Richmond, has a love of fairytales, strong Pisces/8th/12th house in her chart, and a last name that begins with an “S” and is of Celtic origin. We seem to be good luck together and our magic and intuition flow sympathetically.

She picked out an oracle deck for me around this time and a reading I did on myself involved an earth fairy spirit card telling me to awaken my earth and herbal healing gifts so that I could understand that being plugged into and one with the earth is where abundance comes from, not “out there.” This was perfect timing because I had just quit my job which is the scariest thing for a stability loving Taurus like myself but I was pushed internally. I decided to focus on a craft and chose soaps and candles because I realized that I am a healer- but a solitary one. As well as being a natural artist, I simply do not belong in the mechanical part of the world. I don’t like meeting people with my ego, I like to meet them soul to soul, so I can’t put on a fake face for long. I have a natural ability to make something out of seemingly nothing. Like a fairy! I felt a huge sign of confirmation when I was sent a 5 leafed clover the day I finally got my candle&soap supplies!

I believe now that earth and spirit have been sending me on a little scavenger hunt to find my purpose and it came into fruition on the last full moon, after many tests I made my first batch of magical/good luck candles and hypoallergenic/natural soaps that I will be selling here as soon as I get my product line set up!

I will be making and designing my candles and soaps by intuition as I sometimes feel what someone is in need of before they do, as well as custom candles from your requests. I can’t wait to get started! I am officially Akasha the tarot reading, candle&soap making, empathic counseling, birth chart reading, pole dancing, mystic.
