![]() In the world of dating apps and social media, relationships come with distinct implications for our self image. We hang onto things people say about us, build them into our personal truths. We place so much trust in our partners and want so badly to believe what they tell us — we put faith in their words of love and encouragement, but we internalize their negativity as well. When the relationship ends, we move forward with the added insecurities they gave us; after all, if it didn’t work out, it must be because all those ugly parts of us are stronger than the lovable, beautiful parts. We move into new relationships worried that our new partners will see these less flattering reflections we’ve built into our psyches and it turns into a cycle of self-sabotage. March has always been my least favourite month, but it was only through astrology that I realized my discomfort with the Piscean 12th House energy. The ego death and transition associated with the sign’s season brings a flood of emotions that I’m rarely prepared for. But this year was a little different. Themes began to present themselves early on and when I realized that the Astrological New Year coincided with the first of two full moons in Libra, I knew exactly what I had to do. In astrology, the New Year begins with the Spring Equinox. Aries kickstarts the year with a burst of Martial energy. We feel renewed, refreshed—“New Year, New Me” carries more promise during Aries season with all of its self discovery and ego building. But every sign and season carries an opposing energy highlighted by the lunar cycle. In the case of Aries, this opposition is the full Libra moon. Libra is the highest manifestation of Venus, concerned with love and partnership, value and justice, and arts and aesthetic. It also rules the seventh house and our descendant, the area of our charts that tells us about our relationships, marriages, and how we are most intimately known. There’s a tension to full moons and they become a perfect time to purge emotions and situations that no longer serve us. The Moon represents our innermost emotional selves and while in opposition to the Sun, our hidden depths become illuminated. During Aries season, this means that issues of love and partnership are highlighted through self image and personal development. With not one but two full moons in Libra this season, it’s time to take serious stock of relationships and how they affect us personally. ![]() The Libra Full Moon is the perfect time to let go of the damage from past relationships and rewrite our personal truths. Materials: For this ritual, you’ll need a black pullout candle for banishing, kananga water or other spiritual cologne, Crucible of Courage, Fire of Love, or another oil to promote confidence, glitter, flower petals or herbs that correspond to your intention, an inexpensive hand mirror (easily acquired at a thrift or dollar store), and a marker or paint brush to write with on glass. You’ll also need a personal affect and a paper bag to dispose of your materials. Process: On the night of the full moon, carve your name and birthdate into the back of a black pullout candle. Create a sigil based on your intention or simply write your affirmations to embody the brightest parts of yourself and carve this on the front. Bathe the candle in kananga water or a favourite magical cologne and anoint it with Crucible of Courage and Fire of Love oils to inspire passion and bravery. In any spell for attraction or glamour, I use a generous pinch of gold glitter and fragrant flower petals before adding a personal affect to tie myself to the work. A note: always consider the energetic signature of collection. In a healing work such as this, I strongly recommend you bring no further harm to yourself and use only personal affects collected without pain or bodily damage like naturally shed hair, nail clippings, or menstrual blood. While the moon rises overhead, light your candle and meditate on the flame. Consider the wounds you've acquired from ex partners, friends you've drifted apart from, even family—anyone you've known in an intimate capacity. Hold a small hand mirror to your face and write the names of those whose opinions have negatively impacted your self image along with the words they’ve hurt you with. As you do so, allow yourself to register more and more of your reflection, focussing on your features as you would a stranger with a kind, complimentary eye. Then, write qualities you wish to enhance and embody, compliments to your ideal self in large, bold letters over the names and insults that were obstacles to your development. When the mirror is almost completely obscured by beautiful words, place it in a bag, take it outside under the moon, and smash it to pieces. As always, be careful to keep your waste contained and dispose of the remnants in a public trash can to assure that the negative energy you’ve freed is removed from your home. Light the candle every night until it burns out on an altar full of gifts to your ideal self—an ornate antique mirror, jewelry, cups of water, perfume… The results are almost instantaneous. When I performed this spell, not only did I feel myself projecting more confidence and strength, but recurring dreams of past relationships and negative interactions stopped. With my mind clear, I felt a shift in my present relationships and more energy to devote to people who encouraged my growth. This will undoubtedly become a regular part of my practice, an annual Spring Cleaning of my self image each Libra full moon. It’s an important reminder that we are not the perceptions of others in our lives, especially when those people are no longer a part of us—we create and control our own lives.
