Spiritual Materialism & Conscious Living

I remember when I first began on my spiritual path I was enchanted by the crystals, tarot cards, oracle cards, essential oils, singing bowls, candles, herbs, etc. - I literally had to have it ALL. I was so eager beginning my spiritual path that I wanted to know everything, which led me to learn about all of the healing benefits, tools, and remedies. I quickly found myself spending a lot of my time in metaphysical shops or in the bookstore buying spiritual books, and realized that there was always something new and fascinating I really wanted to purchase next.

I had just spent the previous year practicing minimalism. I wasn’t a full blow minimalist but I wanted to instill some of the principles, habits, and mindsets that allowed me to live a more conscious life, so I wouldn’t drown myself in consumerism or retail therapy. I started to realize that I was beginning to fall back into this mindset of “I need this” or “I want that” - sure, there was a level of discernment, but I started to fall into spiritual materialism. I had a strong tendency to just keep purchasing the next amazing thing out on the spiritual market. I mean who could resist this awesome spray that “is reiki-infused with healing crystals and was activated under the majestic waterfall in Bali!” LIKE YES - sign me up and take my card.

The reason why I’m bringing this up is because it’s so easy to fall into the habit of wanting the next best thing out on the market, especially when there are SO many incredible products. This blog is simply to bring awareness to how you might also be under the spiritual materialism spell, and if this does sound like you then here are three simple questions you can ask yourself before making that purchase:

1. Is this something I can see myself using everyday?
This is an important question to ask yourself, because if it’s not something you will be using every day for your practice or at least a few times a week then you can skip it for now. Focus on what you are currently utilizing in your spiritual practice and slowly introduce new things. This will help you build a deeper connection and relationship with the items you currently have.

2. Do I already have an item similar to this that performs the same function or benefit?
If you already have 2 sprays, 2 pendulums, a bunch of oracle cards, 3 bells, 5 of the same crystal, and 1,000 candles then hold off. If after you leave the store and you are still thinking about it a week later then go back and purchase it. Most of the time after I leave the store, the buzz ends up wearing off, and I realize that I already have exactly what I need for now.

3. Am I absolutely in love with this?
We should always only buy things that we are absolutely in love with. When we do it summons such a high vibration out of us that we value the item so much more for the joy it provides us - plus, who doesn’t want to be surrounded by only the things they absolutely love love love.

Feel free to come up with your own set of questions that you internally go through when your in the store or about to make your purchase online. This is all about being mindful and aware of your relationship with the way you spend money, and making sure you’re living in alignment to your values. Conscious spending is a huge part of conscious living!

    Michelle -
    The Inner Mystic

Hi there my name is Michelle! I find all things metaphysical and spiritual absolutely delicious and soulspiring. I'm truly just a nerd who loves crystals, trap music, divination and reading tarot and oracles. I love sharing my spiritual wisdom with my soul sisters on insta @innermystic and my intention is to always bring inspirational, educational or funny content to raise the vibration of the social network.

I work a lot with Goddess Kali, soul embodiment and the medicine of spirit animals. I have a witchy, alchemist, shamanic resonance to me and I was born into this world an empath and disoriented starseed - lol.

I'm here to guide others on their ascension journey back to discovering the universe within and feeling empowered, stepping into the new paradigm of light.

    Much love to all!
